BAND: We Are The Fallen
INTERVIEWER: Sarah Boger (Sarah@bandvibe.com)
INTERVIEWEE: Marty O'Brien, Bassist of We Are The Fallen
DATE OF INTERVIEW: 02.01.10

BAND MEMBERS:
Carly Smithson - Vocals
Marty O’Brien - Bass
Ben Moody - Guitar
John LeCompt - Guitar
Rocky Gray - Drums

BV:How long have you been performing together?
MARTY:Rocky, John and Ben performed for many years while in Evanescence together, but this new band was formed back in April or May of 2009. We officially launched the band in June of 2009.

BV:How did you get started in music?
MARTY: Started playing bass around the age of 14, and by 18 or 19 I was already playing around in local bands back on the east coast.

BV:So how do you go about writing songs?
MARTY:Most of the songs start off with one person in the band recording a basic demo of their idea, then the rest of the band comes in and adds their own input to it. Sometimes we will branch off and a couple people will work on one song together. In the end though, everyone always adds their own input so the songs are definitely a group effort.

BV:How did you come up with the name for the band?
MARTY:Most would speculate that the word 'Fallen' is just a nod to the debut LP by Evanescence, but the full name 'We Are The Fallen' definitely has a stronger meaning to all of us, as I feel that each member was brought into this band because of past situations that either fell apart, disbanded, or musical projects we had going on that did work out the way we had hoped. I feel like we are somewhat of a band of misfits coming together to create something special that we could not have created individually.

BV:What kind of bands do you enjoy touring with?
MARTY: I enjoy touring with any band that has a passionate fanbase that is eager to see a great show. We are hitting the road opening for 'HIM' next month and we're very much looking forward to that.

BV:So do you like to play the bigger venues, or smaller, more intimate clubs?
MARTY:That's a tough question.. Playing in a giant stadium is always amazing because of the huge crowds and giant stage, but the crowd is so far away from you. There is about 40 feet between the band and the front row and a bit of a disconnected feeling from the audience. It's always nice to play smaller clubs too because the crowd is right in front of you. I look forward to playing both small clubs and stadiums on this world tour we're about to embark on.

BV:Is there any one song you especially enjoy playing live?
MARTY: We have not yet played this album live for audiences, so we'll have to wait and see.

BV:What was the first album you ever bought?
MARTY:The Muppet Show.

BV:First concert?
MARTY: KISS, Providence, Rhode Island. I was just a little kid.

BV:If you could tour with any one band, current or not, who would it be?
MARTY: Metallica ?!!? How about Ozzy?

BV:Who is in your CD player right now?
MARTY: I haven't actually listened to music on a CD in about 5 years.. It's all MP3s and iPods over here on shuffle mode. Since we are opening for HIM next month I've been listening to a few of their albums for the past couple weeks.

BV:What’s the one thing you want to go home to the most?
MARTY: When I get home, I hope there is an email there with MORE NEW TOUR DATES!

BV:Zombies are attacking, what do you grab?
MARTY: I will grab Ben Moody and use him as a human shield.

BV:So what's one question you want to be asked in an interview?
MARTY: I've always hoped someone would ask that 'Zombie' question, so thank you for that!

We Are the Fallen's debut album will be released on May 2, 2010. Check out their new digital single, "Bury Me Alive" now!
