 Gary "The Phantom" Farnsworth

Gary "The Phantom" Farnsworth checkin in. Here's the deal, whatever the record is, old or new, whatever the genre, if the band is still recording or not, I'm going to give it to you straight. After I'm done with it you'll know whether or not its a keeper that slays or a wallflower that stays. However, these reviews will not be ridiculously long, because my attention span isn't what it used to be and yours may not be either. But, its always a good time to get a tip of the cap from a stranger about a sweet piece of music that satisfies your need to hear something new and different.

Manitoba- Up in Flames
This is one of those classic situations of a band where I had heard the name, but I had not actually heard their music. Time passed, and I got lazy and forgot to pick this little darlin' up while it was still hot of the press. And just for that a mid 80's model Volvo full of hipster kids should come to my doorstep and kick me in the shins with their Chuck Taylor's until I bleed from the fierce brutality that only hipsters can administer to someone who didn't listen to the right record religously back when it used to be "cool." With that said, I can say that this album is remarkable, and I don't give too many records the old seal of approval during the first go 'round. "Up in Flames" is just beautiful, passionate, uplifting, and the transitions in every song are incredibly well executed. This album gave me a similar wave of feeling as "The Earth is not a Cold Dark Place" by Explosions in the Sky, but it also has a dash of "Loveless" by My Bloody Valentine" stashed away inside of it. Yet, the drum tracks and most of the intricate background noises seems to have their own sort of originality which do not take a page out of the notebooks of the two aforementioned artists. For its genre/sound the drum tracks certainly take the reins and go for it from time to time, however at no point does the speed make your ears uncomfortable or unprepared for the next transition within each track. A complete album, that after ten tracks just left me wanting more. Pick this baby up, and enjoy.

Rating:8.8
Slay Factor: Ain't that type of record sister, but that doesn't mean that it won't be worth your while.
